As we steamroll our way into the holiday season – I am forcing myself to take time to reflect on what it means to be thankful between now and the new year. I often find the “thanks” in Thanksgiving can get overshadowed by the “gimmes” of Christmas. Little Wings Foundation, a small non-profit that I created 5 years ago, very purposefully hosts a family volunteer day each year right around this time. It’s an opportunity for us as adults to teach the younger generations what it means to give back and why it is so important that we do it.
Imagine what it would be like to have to leave your home and move to a shelter. Then imagine circumstances so severe that you arrive at the shelter empty-handed. No tooth brush. No toothpaste. No soap. And no money to buy these items. For most of us it is hard to envision going to sleep at night without brushing our children’s teeth or washing our own faces. For many that is a sad reality.
This year at our Little Wings Gives event we will be helping the people who face those sad circumstances by putting together personal care kits for women and children in need. We are teaming up with some awesome charities from CT, NY and PA to make sure that our kits get into the hands that really deserve them.
On November 24th from 3-5pm we will be gathering together in Greenwich to do good work. We ask that you bring toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, razors, and shaving cream). Get your kids involved with the project from start to finish! Let them be the ones to help you buy the toiletries. It’s a powerful thing when you explain to your children that this holiday season they will be buying basic necessities for those who don’t have them. I am confident that in the giving they will be receiving too.
Little Wings believes you are never too young to give back so please join us with your children of all ages. Kids will be decorating bags, sorting materials, and helping us to stuff personal care kits. Many hands make light work!
