Hair: Flower Crown

Last weekend my husband and I attended a South Pacific themed event for Family Centers, a wonderful non-profit here in our town. I planned on wearing a simple dress and wanted to use flowers or jewelry to make my outfit feel more festive. With the theme being Bali Ha’i I had my heart set on a floral crown. I don’t have a green thumb and have been known to kill a perfectly healthy orchid within days of bringing it home – but I decided to get crafty and bought everything I needed from the great little market in Cos Cob right near the car wash on the Post Road. I won’t lie – the making of the crown took about an hour and 45 minutes. It got rave reviews at the party though so all in all it was totally worth the time. This certainly won’t be the last time I accessorize with flowers!

I bought a bunch of orchids and a handful of fresia stems. I also bought a roll of gardener’s stretch tape and one wire that they traditionally use to help orchids stand. I bent the wire into a circle and secured the two ends with some of the tape. The scissors I already had on hand.

I then trimmed the flowers and greenery and started taping small sections of them in a repeating order to the wire. It’s best to start at the back of the ring and build your way around the wire.

Voila! Don’t forget to try the crown on as you go – making sure that the flowers are balanced. At one point a large fresia bloom was sticking out at a funny angle. I tucked it in and used the gardener’s tape to secure it more firmly to the wire inside.

Added bonus? I smelled like fresh fresia all night long. No perfume needed! Is there any better smell that fresh flowers in the spring? Not in my opinion.
