Little Wings Event: School Supplies for Hurricane Victims

For the last 8 years Little Wings Foundation has done a family volunteer event during the holiday season, but from time to time we do an event out of season when we think people need our help most. We’ve all seen the devastating images from Texas and Louisiana because of Hurricane Harvey. It’s hard to believe that the price tag for all the damages brought on by this category 4 storm is $160 billion dollars, more than 3 times that of Hurricane Katrina. More than 50 inches of rain fell in Texas, more than any flood event in the continental US in the last 1,000 years. Homes were ruined, belongings washed away, and businesses were destroyed. For the children who swarmed to shelters to avoid flood waters, the experience must of been terrifying. Many of them have no homes to return to, and almost all of them lost back packs, school supplies, and clothing due to water damage.

Many people have asked me what we can do to help. A school supply drive seemed like a great way to help children affected by the storm feel like things are getting back to normal. Our goal is to send them to school (hundreds in Houston are still closed) with fresh new school supplies and back packs. For those who are free, we will be gathering at our home on Sunday, September 10th to stuff bags full of school supplies. Little Wings will then ship the school supplies to teachers from the Houston public school system.

What: Little Wings School Supply Drive

When: Sunday, September 10th

Where: Our Garage

Time: 1-3pm to help organize materials and box them to be shipped

(Items can be dropped off any time between 12pm and 6pm on Sunday for those who can’t stay to help organize between 1-3pm!)

Who: All ages welcome! You are never too young to understand why we must help those in need!

• Calculators
• Pencil Cases
• Rulers

And if you are unable to join us but would still like to help, please donate here on the Little Wings website. All donations received before Sunday will be used to pay for shipping the school supplies to Texas. Excess funds raised outside of those costs will be used to buy underwear for those affected through Undies for Everyone.
