Read: All The Light We Cannot See

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr is a beautiful book. It shook me in a way that was painful but also good. I’ve read quite a few books about World War II but this one was different. This one doesn’t focus on the devastation, torture, and loss suffered by the Jewish community living in Europe. This one shines a light on what it was like to be a member of the non-Jewish ally population. We ironically see the war through the eyes of a young French girl who is blind and living in France when the war breaks out. The way she lives and survives in her occupied town breaks your heart. She is so very brave and kind despite all that unfolds around her. And in stark contrast to her life we see the other half of this story through the eyes of a young German savant who is tapped as a radio specialist by the Nazi regime. The book ping pongs between their two lives and we the reader wait in anticipation hoping that their worlds will collide. I won’t spoil it for you. You’ll have to read this absolute gem for yourself if you want to find out what happens.
